PARK

PROMOTING ARTISTS | REDEFINING KULTURE

PARK is a network organized by a group of young Calgarian artists to promote and support fellow young artists in the community. The city is growing, and we are excited to step up and take an active role in helping and shaping how culture will grow in urban Calgary.

From outdoor art sales to indoor fashion and art events, we're making PARK an active verb. The organization of our events is non-profit, with the opportunity for 100 percent of the profit of sale going to the independent artists taking part in the PARKSALE and PARKSHOW.

Vendor: vbot by Vanessa Riego

One artist who is particularly talented in looking creatively at things others might throwaway is Vanessa Riego. Her fantastical pieces incorporate garbage, used clothing pieces, and scraps of fabric that all come together to create beautiful and surprisingly wearable art. Now, that is sustainable creativity!

A major in fibre arts at ACAD, Vanessa has re-worked fabric and materials to create pieces that are both outwardly adorning and highly self-reflective. She has lately worked a lot in self-portraiture, creating remarkable pieces out of a unique medium. It seems natural for Vanessa, who states that her vbot alias self-described “so-called company,” is a project that has been going on for her whole life.
She is driven to be innovate, she says, but also, especially “selfaware and monumental, something which makes a statement to both the one adorning it and moi…something that defines my identity as an artist and as a fiber addict.”

Vanessa will be bringing mostly bags and throwaway items to the PARKSALE this year, and it’s no wonder she’s been so awesome to work with already because, in her words, “I truly enjoy the people (of Calgary’s culture scene). They motivate me when I am at my worst, always reminding me that I am talented and that what I have to say is important … We need more weekend events such as the park and sale, more collaborative activities to stimulate Calgary’s culture scene and people.”

You said it, Vanessa. Let’s get together.
