Vendor: fakesweatshop
Among the many things we’re planning to chat about in this here blog, what we really want to do to get the ball rolling is profile some of the awesome artists we have coming in as vendors at PARKSALE 2009. To give you an idea of the variety and creative spunk of young artists here in Calgary, we are dedicated to showcasing the superb sample of fellows we’ve gotten the chance to meet and share in the experience with.
To start off the introduction to our artists, I want to introduce you to my little friend:

This is Louie, and he is one of the delicious creations handmade by Serena Wells of fakesweatshop. She’s been crafting weird and wonderful toys and animals for about two years, and is inspired by the environment in more ways than one. Besides fashioning beasties who, otherworldly as they may be, seem perfectly suited to a grassy knoll in a city park, Serena’s goal with fakesweatshop is to be mindful of the environment by re-using what we have and avoiding unsustainable materials.
As for inspiration, she claims she finds it in “children’s books.. homeless women in head gear eating hotdogs, you name it.” Her pieces are crafted with an emphasis on getting back to hand work and slowing down, yet she’s also appreciative of the bright colors and smooth style she sees in the Calgary art scene.
Agreeing with us that Calgary needs more interaction within its young art scene, she’ll be bringing her self called “barfy cute kitties + such” to the PARKSALE 2009. You’ll have to come down to meet Louie in person but you can also check out her work at her Etsy shop, where each of her little guys tells its own story. Louie may be a sad little kitty, but the rain is going to stop before he makes his debut, I’m sure, and as his profile says, Louie is here to remind you that “life..IS AMAZING! Enjoy all you have.”
So is Calgary’s art talent, and you can check it with us.
